物化性質：碳酸鎂為白色單斜結晶或無定形粉末。組成一般以x MgCO3· y Mg(OH) 2· z H2O表示。其中x、y、z的比例有幾種，可以為4：1：4， 4：1：5， 4：1：6， 4：1：7， 3：1：3，3：1：4。無毒、無味，在空氣中穩定。相對密度2.16。微溶于水，水溶液呈弱堿性。在水呂的溶解度為0.02％（15℃）。易溶于酸和銨鹽溶液，遇稀酸即分解放出二氧化碳。加熱至300℃以上即分解，生成水、二氧化碳和氧化鎂。
用途：碳酸鎂用作橡膠制品的優良填充劑和補強劑。可用作絕熱、耐高溫的防火保溫材料。石棉輕質碳酸鎂是優良的絕緣材料，用于造船和鍋爐制造等部門。也可用于制造高級玻璃制品、鎂鹽、顏料、油漆和日用化學品等。在醫藥上用作解酸劑。還可作干燥劑、護色劑、載體、抗結塊劑。
